Sharam hai saare duniya ko patha hai ke ek pathan 100 ke barabar hai. History clearly tells that if the Maratha army would have been properly fed the afgans would have been wiped out. Hungry for days before the actual battle n 14Jan,1761 n also without adequate water our brave soldiers had almost won the war by the afternoon. Abdalli was thinking of fleeing the battlefield. But unfortunately by noon due to dakshinayan where the sun is at its worst, the Maratha army got drained out completely. That's the only reason for our defeat. Despite being well fed, the afgans also lost thousands of their soldiers. Is haar ne to Hindustan aur Hindus ki kismat badal di. I observe every 14Jan as a black day.

Before moving further, I must confess that I had very low expectations from the movie. I didn't like the trailer. But in the end, I must also add that this is one of those rare movies where the movie was better than its trailer.
Now coming to the good parts about the movie, firstly, the detailing and attention to historic details. It was very clear that the director and the writers have spent some time and effort into creating this movie. They did their research. Even the way the cannons were portrayed or the way they took the pain to name such a huge number of historical personalities was very impressive. Secondly, the acting. The performances of most of the main actors were good. There would be obvious comparisons between Arjun Kapoor and Ranveer Singh, but I never disliked Arjun Kapoor in a single frame. Other actors have too done justice to their parts. But the obvious stand out performance is definitely that of Sanjay Dutt as Ahmad Shah Abdali. What a great presence he has in this movie. He unveils a new lease of life to the movie as soon as he arrives.
Some areas of concern remain. For example, the first 30 minutes had some really unnecessary scenes. This is where the film could have been shortened. The VFX is very visible in most parts. The songs are pretty forgettable and they just add to the length of the movie without adding any value.
Overall, I would definitely recommend this movie be watched once and in theatres to witness the scale. Remember it's an Ashutosh Gowarikar film, not a Bhansali film. So it will focus more on events and accuracy rather than style and intense drama (I mean both in a good way.

The battle took place between the Maratha Empire and the Afghan army under Ahmad Shah Abdali. The invasion by the King of Afghans was supported by the Afghans of the Doab region, Najib-ud-daulah and the Nawab of Awadh, Shuja-ud-Daula. SadashivraoBhau was the third in power ranks after the King and Prime Minister of the Maratha Empire. Though widely disputed to be the exact battle spot, most historians believe that the largest and most eventful to have fought in the 18th century with possibly the largest number of fatalities took place somewhere near modern-day Sanauli Road and KaalaaAamb. The battle lasting several days involved around 1, 25, 000 troops. Though both sides had losses and gains, Ahmad Shah emerged victoriously. A considerable amount of soldiers were injured in battle and around 70, 000 were killed. The baker, a chronicle by Shuja-ud-Daulahs DiwanKashi Raj considered being the best eye witness to the even has recorded that about 40, 000 Maratha prisoners were killed mercilessly the day following the battle. Mantra, MohnishBahland PadminiKolhapure all manage to shine in the screen time allotted to them. The let-down, however, was ZeenatAmansperformanceas Sakina Begum. Her portrayal of the character was lifeless and her dialogue delivery seemed like she was reading her dialogues from a teleprompter. Overall, Panipat: The Great Betrayal puts forth a layered narrative that dives deep into the complex politics, war strategies, and the importance of forming alliances prevalent during the 18th century and also neatly interweaves the love story between ShadashivraoBhau and ParvatiBai. Though the chemistry between Kriti Sanon and Arjun Kapoor in the romantic scenes, the lavish scale that garners attention in every scene of the film, the costume design of Neeta Lulla, the intricate sets and production design by Nitin Chandrakant Desai, the well-choreographed songs by Ajay Gogavale and AtulGogavale, the sound design by Stephen Gomes take the movie to a high note; the close to three hours run time of the film with too many characters and plot points makes the film a lengthy and tedious narrative. Ashutosh Gowariker, who has a penchant for translating history onto silver screen, brings to us this fascinating battle. Though history, it is often said, is written from the victors point of view, he glorifies the vanquished. The hero here is Sadashiv Rao Bhahu, a Peshwa (Arjun Kapoor) who decides to take on Ahmad Shah Abdali after he is invited by disgruntled elements in India. Sure India was not India back in the 18th century but the idea of Hindostan both Gowariker and his protagonist uphold and float with the secular fabric intact. Though Marathas chant Har Har Mahadev with gusto, Gowariker does not make this a Hindu-Muslim battle and certainly does not feed Islamophobia. Early on in the film, he establishes how traitors are born in every community. Clearly treachery is a thread that runs through the film but Marathas are let down not just by Shuja–ud–Daulah (Kunal Kapoor) but also by Hindu rulers, a few of them on the battleground itself. Indeed, no one can take issues with Gowarikers intentions or his ambition to take us back into the lanes of history. But, it is in trying to strike a balance between historical veracity and the commerce of cinema that he fails. Much of the film as expected is spent in building up the romance between Sadhashiv and Parvati (Kriti Sanon. No doubt, Kriti looks beautiful and has a meaty part too. The film also boasts of two heroines of yesteryear, Padmini Kolhapure and Zeenat Aman. Zeenat, in a small but significant part of Sakina Begum, retains the grace of her youth but doesn't quite stand up to be counted. Padmini shows the same spark that distinguished her in her heydays but is hemmed in by the archetype that her role demands. Much here follows the hackneyed. Marathas breaking into a song every now and then doesnt help except introduce us to the scale of those times and the opulence of the sets. The treatment of the film is rich and the grandeur of those times comes across though not in the same fashion as a Bhansali film. With a smattering of Marathi, the language just about passes muster. Words like gathbandhan shatbhandhan stand out like a sore thumb. Even Abdali (Sanjay Dutt) is introduced with a rather insipid one-liner. Unlike Khilji played to menacing perfection by Ranveer Singh in Padamavaat, Abdali is not so demonised. But then despite looming large on the screen, Sanjay Dutt fails to create a solid impact. And that is the biggest problem of the film. For a film that recreates an epic battle, it doesnt create a powerful impression. Even on the battle ground, everything is spelt out thus diluting the otherwise formidable battle scene formations. Since it all finally boils down to eulogising the bravery of one man Sadashiv, the bloodbath leaves you more cold than emotive. Making a historical, we all know, requires tremendous hard work, research and money. If only Gowariker had added astute skills to his armoury we would not have been forced to say loves labour lost. For, while history stands as witness to Marathas loss, despite their peerless courage, we hate to see Gowariker lose a cinematic battle. More so for alongside goes the earnest endeavour of Arjun Kapoor who looks the part but cant rise above the film.
